Founded in 1934, the British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. With more than 190 offices in 110 countries and territories, British Council creates international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and builds trust between them worldwide.

Britain's relationship through books with Iaşi goes back to 1992, when the British Council opened a British Library in partnership with Biblioteca Centrală Universitară "Mihai Eminescu”.

The new library quickly proved successful and, driven by demand, its collection and services have grown constantly. During 1995 - 2000, a British Council regional adviser was based in Iaşi, working with Romanian colleagues to develop the teaching of English in the region. In time, services and activities diversified and today, apart from the library, British Council Iaşi offers English courses, cultural and educational projects as well as international examinations.
