În faţa aparatului de fotografiat al lui Radu Afrim s-au aflat, în diferite ipostaze, actori cu care regizorul a lucrat de-a lungul vremii. Cum s-a născut însă această dragoste pentru fotografie? Radu Afrim ne-a mărturisit: "Totul a început cu mulţi ani în urmă, când am făcut, cred, prima mea excursie, singur, prin nordul Moldovei, cu aparatul Smena al tatălui meu. Un amic din Bruxelles mi-a făcut mai târziu cadou primul meu Pentax. Nu am nostalgia fotografiei pe film. Fotografia a devenit pentru mine al treilea timp de lucru între cele două repetiţii zilnice la teatru. Deoarece îmi place lumina zilei, mai ales lumina gri a cerului cu nori, sunt puţine orele şi zilele pe care le pot dedica fotografiei. Uneori aş renunţa la proiecte în teatru ca să compun spectacole fotografice. Va veni şi ziua aceea, sper. "
Radu Afrim is one of the few theatre directors to change the face of the Romanian theatre of the past decade. Ever since his debut, he has been a creator with a distinct vision. His theatrical universe is always recognizable. Staging mostly international contemporary texts, his universe is full of sensitivity, humour and irony. His performances mix violence with lirical parts and playfulness. He talks about smashing the human dignity, about rejection, about agression and submission. The space he creates, with delicate slides outside the real, or “reality supplements”, as the artist likes to call them, is unmistakable. His slightly grotesque humor, more often than not, with infusions of surrealist vapors, is always doubled by the unexpressed vulnerability of the (anti)heroes. His playful theatre, an indeterminate blend of innocence and derision, guarantees an escape from everyday life. The theatre director is also a very gifted photograph. When he ends the rehearsals for a performance Radu Afrim usually takes pictures using the actors he works with. He often provides himself the posters for his performances. For a long while his posters were compositions of crowds of bodies, sandwiched together in strange combinations or forming the occasional monolith of nudes. All the characters in this photo exhibition are interpreted by actors.
